New Year, Itchy Feet, New Projects…

This beautiful view is from the top of my village. I leave my house and climb the steep steps through Belvedere Colle to reach this vantage point. When I first moved here it was so difficult, but the steep climb is easy now. I should do it every day, just to remind myself why I moved here. Of course there are lots of other reasons, but the view is very close to the top of the list.
Not everything in life is perfect though, and now I’m at a loose end, looking for a project. Should I concentrate on my writing? Yes I have another book in the works. Shall I explore the countryside on my new electric bike? Yes, of course, but the weather has to get a little warmer.
January is not my favorite month. I don’t feel like it is a month of new beginnings, it’s drab and dreary and chased by February, which isn’t much better. When March arrives I feel much better, but unfortunately March also gives me itchy feet, makes me restless. I know, I’m in my sixties and I should settle down, but I can’t. I’m a traveller, a writer, an adventurer and a crazy Brit who just can’t keep still.

What will 2022 bring…yes, there is a project in the works…what is it? That would be telling.

Stay safe everyone, and keep stopping by to see what this crazy old girl will do next.

Trials and Tribulations

This week has been a challenge! We all get them at times don’t we?
On Sunday, for no apparent reason other than old age, my back started to hurt. It was a little worse on Monday, and by Tuesday I could barely move. Luckily, an excellent physiotherapist lives very close, and I was able to snag an appointment. I’ve learned from experience (my back is my weak area), that you have to power through it. Lying around moping just makes it worse.
Late Tuesday evening I got a message from “the engineer” letting me know they’d like to start work on our upstairs bathroom remodel early Wednesday morning…something I was looking forward to, but it posed an extra challenge with my painful back.
Tile removal, dust, drilling replacing all of the water pipes…dust settles and re-settles…oh what a week.
Now it’s Saturday and hopefully most of the “messy” work is done. Someone is currently in the room throwing concrete at the wall. Tiling next week? Let’s hope so.
On a positive note, my back feels tender, but much better. The sun is shining, and on Monday with restrictions lifted, we can drive to the Adriatic. My spirits are lifted already.

Stay safe everyone and have a lovely weekend!

The Rhythm of Retirement

The rhythm of retirement, I like the sound of it.
It’s been a busy week, I always find plenty to do. Sitting around isn’t for me. This week I planned a remodel of a bathroom. Hate the mess, but always love the look of fresh new flooring and tiles. Vincenzo “The Engineer”, took me to Villa Santa Maria to pick out tiles and such, it was fun. I understand more Italian now…and certainly understood the end price. I repeated it as the sales guy added it up, and before he told me. Took him by surprise! We all laughed.
Walked a lot of course, and still enjoy the views of our fairytale village.
I even enjoy grocery shopping now because I can chat (a little bit) to the people who work in the store. I’m sure they see me coming and say:
“Watch out, its that crazy old Brit who tries to speak Italian”
Today I made a start on pots and planters on our terrace. I think we may be spending a lot of time at home this summer. Vaccines are coming slowly. The lovely young lady in the garden shop greeted me like an old friend and helped me pick the best plants for my display. Photo’s to come. It was almost dark by the time I finished planting.
I also ordered an electric bike from the Trek shop in Perano…aren’t I just the brave one! My husband’s bike arrived on Monday and he’s loving it so I thought “why not?”
I may not get it until December because everything is so backlogged at the moment, but I can wait. I ordered it in red of course!
Well that’s another week over. Lester retires next week. Friday is his last day. We’re both old timers now. It’s exciting. We have some great years ahead of us!!! Watch out Italy!

Chchch Changes

My driver’s license photo is ten years old because I renewed on-line five years ago! Today, I had to go to the DMV. A ten-year old photo just doesn’t cut it.  The eye test, it was pretty easy…and then I had to answer the questions…Changes

Weight? UGH – probably 10 pounds heavier than ten years ago, but 1 pound a year isn’t bad is it?

“I have your hair color down as red” she said and her eyes rested on my short grey hair, “I guess I’d better change that too”

Escape to the Mountains

I survived a long tiring week. A week with so much going on it was hard to keep up. It was my birthday on Thursday. I reached the ripe old age of 56. Hard to believe as I feel at least twenty years younger. Maybe I got the dates wrong. I had a lovely day, made special by friends and family. Beautiful roses from my daughter.

The week ended with a relaxing day in Keystone. After riding two gondola’s to get to the highest mountain peak, we arrived at the AlpenGlow Stube, where we shared a very special lunch with friends and family. After sipping champagne, I felt my troubles slip away.Alpenglow Stube at Keystone

We all enjoyed a gourmet meal in wonderful surroundings. You can’t beat a glass of Champagne at 12,000 feet.

The views from the top of the mountain are breath-taking and I didn’t want to leave, but all good things have to come to and end.

Next time I visit Keystone, I will take my snowboard and enjoy the beautiful mountain the way it should be enjoyed. I am NOT the fastest snowboarder on the mountain, but I certainly enjoy the ride.

I wish this was me, but it’s not. I am NOT quite that agile.

Monday tomorrow! Not ready for it, but the money has to be earned so I can enjoy my little weekend trips. I intend to visit the mountains a lot more in 2013. We don’t have the Ocean here in Colorado, but I think the mountains are the next best thing.
